Our first stop was the Frontier Culture Museum. I had been dying to share that place with Banjo Boy, it is where I want to LIVE I was also super excited to test my new architectural fieldwork skills onidentifying anddating some of the building-bits there. In addition to exploring original homesteads of German, English, Irish, and American decent....

There were piggy noses.

And whisperers exchanged with chickens.

And playings with massive tools. Oh-- look at those muscles

And sweet-eyed lambs. Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy..... A kidapos;ll eat ivy, too... Wouldnapos;t you?

We spent way too much time at the FCM, so we ended up finding a room for the night somewhere in the Norman Rockwell-esque town of Staunton. We continued on our way the next morning, very early because we had BIGPLANS for a BIGHIKE

My watch magically ran out of batteries as soon as we arrived in the wilderness, and I was glad for it. No cell phone, no internet, no watch...it was heaven. We had our water, some food, multiple layers of clothing, our feet--- and about 12 miles of mountain, gorge, and streamto go through. Unfortunately- in a moment of tremendous stupidity- I left my hiking boots in DC and ended up hiking the whole thing in myCrocs.Crocs are certainlyNOT the ideal footwear for such a trek-- but Imade it out alive, and with minimal damage

See those ridges? That gorge? Yeah. We did all that. I am very proud.

On our hike we saw lots of snakes-- a good assortment, too. We also found bear tracks, an abandoned farmhouse, and ruins from a few old homesteads.

The path went RIGHTUPTHOSEROCKS

At about mile 8, the path began climbing back out of the gorge. At one point we had to cross into a cow pasture and hike through the pastureland. Off in the distance I saw something glinting red--- a tree that glowed a brighter red than Dorothyapos;s Ruby Slippers... Weapos;d stumbled across an ancient apple orchard

We had only just begun harvesting the apples when we heardwhat sounded like atremendous stampede. I was genuinely scared and looked to see which apple tree could provide me the best safety....for over the hill came a herd of galloping cattle... Right... Towards... Us

Lucky for us, they were only interested in the apples. We shook the branches of the trees and the cows practically sucked the apples from the ground. Hereapos;s Banjo Boy bonding with a hefer. She drooled all over the place.

We each had about 20 pounds of apples in our backpacks by the time we said farewell to our cow friends. The rest of our hike took us up along a clear mountain ridge-- mostly more pastureland for the cows. The sun was beginning to set.

The weekend was a total blur.Other than the Frontier Culture Museum, the Hike of Awesome, and Camping, we spent one night in a cabin built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps to house the men working on the Blue Ridge Parkway, purchased close to 25 lbs of cabbage from a farm stand, and ate biscuits and gravy at a diner that looked out over the townapos;s only stoplight.

This morning I rode the metro cramped with black business suits. I walked through busy Chinatown, made my way to my office building, to my floor, and then to by cubicle. I got slammed with a million emails, cell phone messages, and of course, the news about the war, the economy, etc.

All thatapos;s got me a little down. Iapos;m feeling overwhelmed andIkinda wantto flush my watch and cellphone down the toilet, hide my computer in the closet, and drive back out to Southwest Virginia.

Yesterday was our two year anniversary Iapos;m so happy. Iapos;ve never been in a better relationship, and yesterday just made my longest relationship ever. Iapos;m so glad I decided to give dating another try, two years ago. Jenn is truly one of the best things thatapos;s ever happened to me. A couple days before, she made my favorite chicken casserole It was delicious I really couldnapos;t tell which I liked more: hers or my grandmothers I wrote a special love letter to her with a kiddie drawing on the front, and got her some flowers. She got me an awesome love letter in the image of a weighted companion cube I love it This weekend weapos;ll be picking out a scrapbook to add to for the rest of our lives. I feel so very blessed I was trying to make a special LJ pic for this occasion, but... I couldnapos;t find anything to set our rings on Hopefully I can edit it later. Happy Anniversary, My Darling

OK, I head out for my morning bank run when something familiar catches my eye. Itapos;s one of our rental DVD cases, laying in the parking lot. Looks rather beat up, too. I open it up and the DVD is inside, intact. Thanking my lucky stars, I drop it in the storeapos;s return slot and get back to my errands.

On the way back, I spot another disc laying in the road next the parking lot. It is another one of our DVDs and laying in the gutter is the slipsheet for the rental. No DVD case. The disc looks like itapos;s OK, and I hurry back to the store. Both discs were rented out by the same person yesterday and there are still 2 more that Iapos;m assuming is in their possession.

Now when I found the first one, I thought "OK, maybe it fell out his car, shit happens, ya know". But now Iapos;m not so sure. The 2nd disc was laying in the middle of the road, the slipsheet is in the gutter, and the DVD case is missing. THE CASE I donapos;t know if this is severe neglect or just downright spitefulness. And I know who rented from us, I remember the transaction. I even gave them a stupidly good deal on their late fees. And then they turn around and treat me like this? And people wonder why I get mad and discouraged. For all the good customers and the people that make me glad to be in this business, I get these jerks who have no respect for us, our property or the services we try to provide. It just makes me sick.

Iapos;m seriously thinking of hanging the "Back in 10 minutes" sign and going through the parking lot to see if any of our property is laying around that I might recover before itapos;s seriously damaged. Iapos;ve already flagged the guyapos;s account.

If your neighborhood anime store owner is a bit surly, itapos;s because of shit like this.

The battle for lakeside tournament poker players has begun, and it looks like the Horseshoe has the early advantage.

At the end of the month the Horseshoe will hold the area's first World Series of Poker Circuit event. Starting tomorrow the Majestic Star will fire up their Deep Stack Challenge, running through the 26th.

The main event for at the MS conflicts with the WSOPC. Obviously, the newer Horseshoe has a huge advantage - especially with the World Series of Poker branding, but the standards for success at each poker room is different. It will be interesting to see who wins this round in the battle between the two biggest poker rooms in the Chicago area.

I like you.

I love you.

I love you.

I love you.

Iapos;m sorry.

Goodbye.

Love.
I wonder about this word almost all the time.
What I donapos;t seem to understand is why we are what we are?
Why are we this way?
Why did god make us this way?

Loving someone seems like such a big step to make,
Too much risk. Too much pain. Too much.

Out of everything I have been through,
People I know.
People Iapos;ve known.
Everything Iapos;ve Been Through.
Is it really worth it?

Well, I guess the answer is yes.
Or maybe itapos;s no.
The tears are always worth the happy ending.
Yet there is never a happy ending.
Just an ending.
Or a new beginning.

I think that Love is pretty retarded.
The end.

I take back my evilmean words about rainy autumn. Itapos;s been nothing but beautiful these past days. Sunshine, mildly crisp air, colorful leaves... Whee

Doesnapos;t make Monday at the office all that much easier to bear.

Watched "Atonement" yesterday evening, thanks to my beautiful new DVD rental place membership. Very sad. But oooh, pretty pictures

I also watched "Elizabeth - the Golden Age", which was less intriguing than the first part, and a French movie about the St. Bartholomew massacre, which was so bad, I just shut it off.

Next up: "Sense and Sensibility" (again) and "Marie Antoinette" (again) and something... Hmm... Happy. Recommendations?

In other news, I loooooooooooove my new girl roommate. She is nurse and has this entire work ethic about cleaning the kitchen and... Everything is so home-like and nice now. She bought furniture for the bathroom *swoons*
